GH is a phenomenal medical assistant. However, he has an extremely loud voice that carries through the office. When he is talking, even in a patient room with the door closed, the information discussed can be easily heard in the hallway or adjacent room. This has been distracting to other providers and even a HIPAA risk. The practice has tried to address this issue with subtle mentions and hints to turn down the volume. These efforts have failed, relationships are strained, and GH has not lowered the volume of his voice.
Diagnosis:
Excessive volume
Recommendations:
- Start by incorporating the volume issue into formal employee reviews
- To have this potentially difficult conversation, ensure employee reviews start with all the positive traits the individual possesses and then explain how excessive volume causes problems for other employees and creates a potential HIPAA risk
- In extreme situations consider reassigning roles for a loud talker so the volume will not be a problem
